The type of condenser that cools hot gas from the compressor by spraying water on the coils is the evaporative-cooled condenser. This system utilizes the principle of evaporation to enhance heat transfer. When water is sprayed on the coils, it absorbs heat from the hot gas, causing some of the water to evaporate. The process of evaporation requires energy, which is taken from the heat of the gas, leading to a significant reduction in temperature of the refrigerant. This method is particularly efficient as it combines both air and water cooling mechanisms, often resulting in better cooling performance than air-cooled or water-cooled systems alone.

Air-cooled condensers rely solely on ambient air for cooling, and water-cooled condensers utilize water from a cooling tower or source, but neither incorporates the evaporative aspect as effectively as the evaporative-cooled condenser does. Heat exchangers generally refer to devices that transfer heat between two or more fluids and are not typically classified under the same cooling methods as condensers.
